Maniday: Australis – Crackle

Ed’s note: This post was written by Contributing Editor, Kate Derrick.

Brand/Product: Australis – Crackle Colour nail polish.

Colour: Crackle in black. It’s a top coat. When you paint it over the top of your base colour it gives a broken-glass effect. I bought the black but Crackle also comes in a few other colours too.

Price: $8.95 from Priceline, Big W, Kmart, selected pharmacies or online.

Why I wore it: So Emma’s creativity with nails has inspired me and I thought I can try something a bit funky too. I saw Crackle online and thought, “That looks funky and all I have to do is paint it on as a top coat.”

Well I think I failed. And not to blame the nail polish either.

As I discovered there’s definitely a trick to applying Crackle. You cannot paint over your initial brush stroke, it just smudges the nail polish and the crackle effect is gone, forever. It’s essential you apply crackle in single, generous strokes. This I’m told is a feature of all nail polishes that give the broken-glass effect, not just Australis.

At first I thought the black would look great with Raspberry by Natio. But in fact I think you need a brighter, more contrasting colour as the base to give the best effect. So then I tried Crackle with Show Off by Face of Australia. This worked much better.

Verdict (Yay or Nay): Hmmmm… Nay from my 31-year-old self. After only a couple of tries I began to get the hang of applying Crackle and I began to see the effect could look good. But would I wear it? Probably only to a fancy dress. Or perhaps if I was younger and funkier.
